December 2020 marked South East and Central Essex Mind’s third Mental Elf Fundraiser event. Our usual physical event was obviously not possible during the pandemic so this time, to ensure that our popular flagship fundraiser could go ahead and to continue to help raise vital funds for our charity, Mental Elf 2020 went virtual!
Our virtual event allowed anyone to take part throughout December with a challenge of completing 54 miles however and whenever they wished. This distance represented the area we cover as a Local Mind within Essex, including Castle Point, Chelmsford, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea and South Woodham Ferrers.
We had a wonderfully positive reaction from supporters considering this was our first virtual event and held at the end of such a difficult and uncertain year. Charity fundraising has suffered during Lockdowns so we were so grateful for amazing support from the community including an under 14 girls football club, local running group, and primary school all taking part. We also had inspiring individuals who dusted of their festive attire and took to the streets to walk, jog and run their 54-mile challenge in their Elfy outfits.
As part of our fundraising we also ran ‘Elf Checks’ throughout December, holding bucket collections in the high streets and helping raise mental health awareness in the run up to Christmas.
Together we have raised a staggering £4315.50
We'd like to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to every hardworking elf that took part and to their family and friends who kindly donated.
South East and Central Essex Mind is a local and independent mental health charity offering mental health services, training and signposting. Although affiliated with the well known National Mind, we do not receive funding from them or the government and rely on fundraising and donations to run our services.
On reflection, after the unprecedented events of 2020 this challenge was about more than just fundraising. We hope it was the opportunity to take part in something fun, offered a positive goal to focus on, and the opportunity to improve both physical and mental wellbeing.
Access to mental health support is more important than ever, and the funds raised during this event will go towards helping us continue to run vital local services and ensuring our charity is here for those who need us in 2021.
